A public hearing will be held Nov. 30 at 5:30 p.m. to consider amending the uses found within the highway commercial district zones of Penhold.
Council gave first reading to a bylaw amending the Land Use Bylaw and scheduled the hearing during its regular meeting Nov. 12.
Chief Administrative Officer Rick Binnendyk said an application was made to have the amendment made by a person who is interested in purchasing a parcel of land along the highway.
“I'd say they were quite serious,” he said.
A report to council by Parkland Community Planning Services said changing the highway commercial district uses to include some of those found in the general commercial district was requested to increase the saleability of land in the Hawkridge Estates development.
Those proposed uses include the permitted uses of financial institutions, financial services, health services facilities and personal services facilities. Discretionary uses under the bylaw would include drive-thru/express establishments, funeral homes and crematoriums and veterinary clinics.
Binnendyk said currently a health services business couldn't open up along the highway, but under the proposed bylaw it could.
Coun. Heather Klein had a concern with one of the proposed discretionary uses.
“I would not like to see a crematorium on 2A. Funeral home, yes,” she said.
Councillors present voted unanimously to pass the first reading of the bylaw and to schedule the public hearing. Coun. Wendy Dodman and Mayor Dennis Cooper were absent from the meeting.
