Juno award nominee and children's recording artist Mary Lambert recently blazed the trail for fire prevention and safety at school.
Lambert visited students at John Wilson Elementary School on Oct. 15 to perform her hit Sing Out Fire Safety song.
“Kids learn really well through music and the repetition of music,” Lambert explained before her performance last week. “I have lots of different theme (songs), but this to me is the most important because I've heard of real, life stories about the kids going home and telling their parents about what they've learned. It truly does save lives, but it's fun and important work as well.”
The interactive musical involved student performers and firefighters, while creating an opportunity for children to learn about the responsibilities of firefighters, fire safety tips, smoke detectors and fire drills.
It included demonstrations as well as questions and answers.
Over the last couple of weeks, Lambert has performed in Sylvan Lake, Wetaskawin, Airdrie and in Red Deer County.
“Then I'm going to be in Drayton Valley for a couple of days,” she added.
The Innisfail Fire Department and Red Deer County sponsored the interactive musical performance to encourage students to learn about the importance of fire safety.
“From the Innisfail Fire Department's point of view, the fellas here think it's really important that we team up with Mary Lambert Productions to promote fire safety,” said fire Chief John Syroid. “We enjoy doing it and we enjoy having the kids come to the performance.”
Syroid said the lessons Lambert brought could last a student's entire lifetime.
“They (kids) need to learn how to be safe and move away from a burning building or a dangerous area,” said Syroid.
And the benefits of the unconventional programming were noticed by all, as teachers clapped in unison with their students. In fact, John Wilson Elementary principal Jackie Taylor echoed Syroid's message after the performance.
“I think for the students, it brings the best of fire safety tips to students in a very interactive way and it gets the students involved in great songs and actions that go with them,” Taylor said. “It's an excellent way for students to remember fire safety tips to share and discuss with parents in homes, and really work on that whole home fire safety piece.”
