It was a record year for Penhold development permits.
As of mid-December, more than $27-million in permits had been issued for the year, smashing through the previous record of $10.2 million.
Planning and Development Officer Tricia Willis said about $12 million of the total was for the new high school.
Aside from the school, 56 of the development permits were for houses, five for duplexes and one industrial permit for a $1-million expansion to a local business.
ìThe biggest number after that are additions,î Willis said.
There was a second institutional permit issued aside from the school, but that was for a wheelchair ramp at one of the other educational buildings.
No commercial permits were issued for 2012, something Willis is hoping will change next year.
ìThere is talk of commercial coming in so I'm hopeful by 2013 there will be some commercial taking place,î she said. ìI'm hoping the talk becomes the reality.î
This was the second year in a row the building permit record was broken. In 2013 $10.2 million in permits were issued.
Until then the previous record had been set at about $10 million in permits, which had been handed out in 1997.
Politicians and students gathered Penhold Regional Multiplex Nov. 2 to celebrate the start of construct on the new school which is expected to open in September 2014.
