INNISFAIL - Dustin Daines, the organizer for the 60th Annual Innisfail Professional Rodeo at the Daines Ranch, said no final decision has been yet on whether this year’s event, scheduled for June 12 to 14, will run.

However, he added that with the current provincial COVID-19 preventative guidelines in place it’s doubtful it will take place.

Daines said a final decision would be made on May 1 when Alberta Health Services is expected to make a bi-monthly statement about whether COVID-19 guidelines should remain in place.

He added a letter has been sent to Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA Devin Dreeshen to see if there is a way a heavily modified and shortened one-day event can be hosted while maintaining all provincial COVID-19 guidelines, including those for social distancing and group gatherings.

“The worst thing we can do is break any Alberta Health guidelines. We certainly don’t want to do that,” he said. “We are trying to continue the rodeo because it is our 60th year. As you know, if you don’t have an event it might not come back.”
