A Penhold-area man is in critical condition and four others injured following a two-vehicle rural-area crash last week.

At about 8 p.m. on Oct. 24 Innisfail RCMP was called to a collision scene at the intersection of Highway 42 and Rge. Rd. 272. Red Deer Integrated Traffic Services and fire and ambulance personnel assisted the RCMP on scene.

Innisfail RCMP Const. Chad Hirtle said a Ford F-350 pickup truck was travelling northbound on Rge. Rd. 272 and carrying two occupants when it collided with a Toyota Tundra travelling eastbound on Highway 42.

All three individuals in the Toyota Tundra were trapped inside the damaged vehicle and had to be freed by the fire department, said Hirtle.

He said all five people involved in the collision suffered varying degrees of injury and were transported by ground ambulance to the Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Hirtle said one male who was transported by ground ambulance to the Red Deer hospital was later airlifted to Calgary's Foothills Medical Centre by STARS air ambulance.

S. Sgt. Chris Matechuk of the Innisfail RCMP detachment, said the man from the Penhold area remains in critical condition.

Matechuk said all five persons involved in the crash are from either the Penhold or Rimbey areas.

He said investigators' preliminary determination is that the cause of the accident is due to a stop sign violation. Matechuk said alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The RCMP Collision Reconstruction Unit from Red Deer attended to examine and document the collision scene.

Matechuk said charges have not yet been laid and the investigation into the crash continues.
