Penhold has decided to consider putting chicken coops on the municipal bandwagon.
In a motion put forward by Coun. Kathy Sitter on Feb. 25, council decided to have administration study the issue of allowing the feathered animals within town limits.
“Administration's going to look at it and bring back recommendations to council,” said Mayor Dennis Cooper. “Some people think it's a cool idea.”
Last month Red Deer city council agreed to extend a pilot project for backyard chickens until March 31, 2014. They have also decided to stay involved with the Canadian Liberated Urban Chicken Klub (CLUCK).
A few years ago a Penhold resident was forced to remove backyard chickens. No roosters would be allowed under the current conception.
“Why did the chicken cross the road?” asked Cooper. “Because it got out of the neighbour's property.”
The administration report is expected in about a month.
