Roving traffic unit makes pot busts

A roving traffic unit made up of officers from around Alberta descended on the QEII near Innisfail last week.

On Aug. 22, the unit was patrolling at about 5 p.m. and one officer stopped a vehicle with an expired licence plate. The smell of fresh marijuana was coming from the vehicle and police ended up seizing over 100 grams of pot, Cpl. A.J. Mand said.

The driver was a male in his 40s from Calgary, said Mand. He was charged with possession.

The roving traffic unit made three stops where they found smaller amounts of marijuana over three days, Aug. 21-23. In those cases warnings were issued and all drug paraphernalia was seized and destroyed, Mand said.

The unit was called into an incident on Aug. 20 after a sheriff stopped a rental vehicle that was travelling at a rate of 152 km/h on QEII at night. The smell of fresh marijuana was present and the roving traffic unit found half a pound of the drug in the vehicle. A male from Airdrie was charged with trafficking, the corporal said.

A home on Dundee Close was broken into the same day, between 10 a.m. and about noon. Police said access was gained through the garage door, and reminded the public to lock their doors.

RCMP said both personal jewelry and jewelry that was to be sold was taken. The personal jewelry was of various kinds and was worth between $3,000 and $5,000. The business stock could have been sold for about $4,500, police said. The business jewelry was all rings, and it all comes in a box branded Morellato and each piece has a serial number and a certificate of authenticity. About 20-30 boxes of different sizes were taken.
