INNISFAIL – Volunteers play a vital role in any community.

The towns of Innisfail and Penhold are celebrating their volunteers during National Volunteer Week, from April 7 to 13.

Penhold is hosting an event at the Memorial Hall on April 11.

The evening includes a dinner and music by members of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra.

“There’ll be a dinner catered by Devine’s and there are a couple of musicians (from the symphony orchestra) that we were able to book. They will be performing for us that evening,” said Jennifer Blaylock, FCSS coordinator for the Town of Penhold.

“There’ll be a couple of speeches, thank yous and door prizes,” she added. “It will be just a nice evening for everyone to relax and recognize all the hard work that volunteers do in our community and thank them.”

The Town of Innisfail is hosting several events throughout the week to say thank you to its volunteers.

“Last year we sponsored three events and this year we’ve added another one,” said Karen Bradbury, community and social development coordinator with the Town of Innisfail.

Similar to last year, the town is providing several events free of charge throughout volunteer week, noted Bradbury.

Included this year is free bowling at Innisfail Bowling Lanes, from 5:30 to 6:30 and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on April 9; free music, mocktails and munchies at the Innisfail Royal Canadian Legion from 2 to 4 p.m. on April 10; a free swim night at the Innisfail Aquatic Centre from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on April 11; and a free matinée show --  A Dog’s Way Home -- at the Century Theatre at 1:30 p.m. on April 13.

“We put in the extra event this year (music, mocktails and munchies) because we also want to make sure that we have a good variety of activities that appeal to all age groups,” said Bradbury, noting families, teens, young adults and seniors all took part last year.

“Last year throughout our three events we had 250 people come out,” Bradbury concluded.

Registration is required for all events. People can RSVP by calling the town at 403-227-3376 ext. 233 or 225.
