Where once stood little more than grass Raspberry Park Toboggan Hill will rise 15 feet if the Lions Club has its way.
With so many youth already using the small hill at the school grounds and in order to alleviate the need for children to go all the way out near the ski hill, the club has been working to create another slope for sliders.
“It just gives a whole bunch of kids something to do on warm winter days,” said Larrie Davis, the Lions Club secretary. “Kids can get some fresh air and some exercise.”
Originally the land was designated as a school site, he said, but none was ever built. In 2004 the club built a playground and a picnic shelter in the park, and had wanted to add on to it. They started talks with Malcolm Contracting Ltd. about getting in on the project.
“I had actually talked to Malcom last spring as to whether they would be interested in helping us with it when they had some dirt available,” he said, but they had none at that point to offer.
After Davis read an article in the Province in October announcing the company had won the contract to rough shape a berm along the east boundary of the Highway 54 road ditch, he picked up the phone and made the call.
“Hey we need to get this thing built if possible,” he said. “They had said yes, of course they would help with it.”
Council heard Nov. 26 that the creation of the hill was technically feasible but residents needed to be brought into the process for input. An open house was scheduled to be held Dec. 3.
