Innisfail RCMP is seeking the public's help in nabbing the culprits who stole $5,000 from newlyweds at a Penhold wedding reception.

Sometime between 3 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sept. 1 a thief or thieves stole numerous wedding cards at the Penhold Community Hall that contained $5,000 in cash and cheques, said Innisfail RCMP Cpl. Don Morrish.

He said the bride and groom, who were married the day before, said the cards were in a basket when they left the hall at 3 a.m. and were gone when they returned to the hall at 11 a.m.

Morrish said there was sign of forced entry into the hall.

He said if anyone has any information about the crime he or she can contact Innisfail RCMP at 403-227-3342 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Cops report quiet long weekend

All was relatively safe and quiet on Innisfail roads and area highways during the September long weekend – just as it was throughout the province.

Throughout the long weekend, Integrated Traffic Unit members were busy conducting Check Stops and traffic operations at various locations across the province, primarily focusing on dangerous behaviours including impaired driving, unsafe speed, non-use of seatbelts and distracted driving.

“Given that road and weather conditions were perfect and the significant increase in traffic volume, most Albertans were responsible, safe drivers and enjoyed a great long weekend,” said Howard Eaton, officer–in-charge, for the RCMP's K Division Traffic Services.

However he added there were some individuals who “ignored common sense and placed others travellers at risk with their dangerous behaviours.

In the Central Alberta region a 36-year-old male was caught driving his motorcycle at 181 km/h on the QE II near Carstairs and a 24-year-old male from Montreal was nabbed driving his motorcycle at 177 km/h along the QE II near Crossfield.

Innisfail RCMP reported that they responded to only minor incidents during the long weekend.

“Generally, it was very quiet,” said Innisfail RCMP Cpl. Don Morrish. “There were a few traffic complaints and some alcohol-related offences but it was generally quiet.”

Local man busted for drugs

An Innisfail man, parking on a local street, is facing drug charges.

Innisfail RCMP Cpl. Don Morrish said at about 2 a.m. on Aug. 25 a police officer observed a vehicle parked on a residential street with its interior light on.

The officer observed a lone male sitting in the passenger seat drawing. The subject was sweating profusely and appeared to be under the influence of a narcotic, said Morrish.

He said a further investigation revealed the man had outstanding warrants for his arrest.

The man was arrested, and a subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered marijuana and methamphetamine, said Morrish.

The male was charged for possession of marijuana and methamphetamine and released to appear in Red Deer provincial court on Sept. 26.
