Heavy rains caused two vehicles to lose control with a third receiving damage as well Saturday morning on the QEII highway, said police.
Just after 10 a.m. a northbound vehicle lost control about two kilometres south of Red Deer and spun into the centre cable barrier.
A separate driver pulled over and went to help the occupants of the first vehicle, when he himself was nearly struck by a second vehicle heading north that also lost control and collided with both vehicles.
“The male who had stopped to assist had just stepped back into his truck seconds before a vehicle collided with his vehicle, skidding past where he was standing,” said Cst. Steven Molnar of the Innisfail Integrated Traffic Unit.
Red Deer Emergency Services attended and treated two people on scene for minor injuries. Molnar said despite the severity of the crash there were relatively minor injuries reported. All passengers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash and Molnar said if the cable barriers weren't in place the drivers likely would have continued through the median and into opposing traffic.
The northbound lanes of the highway were limited to just one lane for about one hour while emergency crews cleaned up debris. Neither excessive speed or alcohol are considered factors.
One person was charged for distracting driving.
