With the provincial government terminating its Summer Temporary Employment Program, the town has agreed to help out the Innisfail & District Chamber of Commerce this summer by picking up a one-time cost of $4,500 to operate the tourism information booth.
On June 24 at town council's regular meeting, members were told the chamber made a request for financial support to have the tourism booth staffed this summer.
Administration was asked by council to prepare a letter of understanding with the chamber to define terms of a funding donation.
In the letter of understanding, it is agreed by both the town and the chamber that the funding is provided “solely” for the 2013 season and that it be used to hire a seasonal employee to operate the Tourism Information Centre.
The agreement also stipulates the town will provide free rent, property taxes as applicable, utilities and building maintenance. The chamber agreed to operate the Tourism Information Centre annually and provide a seasonal employee from May 15 through the September long weekend.
