The second annual Weekend of Wheels was a success according to its organizer.
“Awesome,” was how Deb Stoski described the weekend, which included a show and shine, an art show, street market and100-foot shootout races.
She said attendance was huge.
“There was people everywhere,” she said of the Sept. 8 events, which were the show and shine, the art show at the legion and the street market on 49 Street.
On Sept. 9, the day of the shootout, the organizing team brought in extra bleachers compared to last year. Stoski said those extra seats filled right up.
This year there were about 150 cars at the show and shine and 58 cars registered for the 100-foot shootout.
Lots of people made their way through the art show and street market, she said, and the food vendors did well.
“Sunday they ran out of food,” she said.
New rules aiming to make the shootout and show and shine more fair were successful, she added.
“I think they really enjoyed that,” she said.
Feedback she's received so far indicates people thought it was a great event. Still, she's already planning for next year. She and her core group of volunteers made notes as the weekend went on.
“We still got lots of things we got to improve on,” she said. For starters, she hopes next year will bring more volunteers.
Lots of people helped out, she said. Some folks accompanying an RCMP race car that came from Sherwood Park ended up pitching in with crowd control. When technological difficulties affected the shootout, Tom Lindl and his band hit the stage to keep the attendees entertained.
Overall the weekend worked well.
“Lots of smiles, lots of people,” Stoski said.
