While there is no formal announcement about what contractor successfully bid to build the new Penhold high school, some initial dirt work is underway at the site.
Last week the area beside the Penhold Regional Multiplex where the school will be attached was fenced off with signs naming Clark Builders. Activity can be spotted on the site.
Chinook's Edge School Division was unable to provide any information about the contractors.
Tracy Larsen, a spokesperson for Alberta Infrastructure, said the contractor will be announced soon.
“We have indeed signed a contract,” Larsen said.
The new school is slated to open in September 2014. Grades 7-12 will attend the school.
Penhold town council heard a report that contractors had been selected during its Sept. 10 council meeting.
In a later interview, Mayor Dennis Cooper said the start of construction will help lay to rest any fears the school won't go in.
“We're going to be very happy when we see dirt start to move,” he said Sept. 11, before work had started at the site.
Cooper explained in a recent public meeting that the school will use multiplex facilities like the library and gymnasium as part of a joint use agreement.
The school's being built as part of a public-private partnership project that is building or modernizing 35 schools across Alberta.
