Forty area youngsters know a lot more about safe all-terrain vehicle (ATV) use after attended a recent one-day course at the Sundre rodeo grounds.

Sponsored by the Sundre and District Agricultural Society, the Sept. 20 Youth ATV Safety Awareness Day was conducted by Mudd Safety Awareness Inc.

It saw kids age six to 16 receive lectures on general ATV safety, including the use of helmets and how to keep control of the machine on rough ground.

The course also included an afternoon of riding through obstacle courses with instructors watching and giving tips.

Many of the participants were raw beginners in ATV use.

"There is a lot of use of ATVs these days, including by young people,” said Lesley Lovell, secretary-treasurer of the society. “Pretty much on every farm there are ATVs. We felt it was a good program to promote ATV safety on the farm and recreationally as well. As the society we wanted to stress farm and general ATV safety."

All 40 participants in the course received brand-new ATV helmets.
