Mountain View County’s policies and priorities (P&P) committee has been given an update on a project to create a coffee table book featuring paintings of barns, with accompanying articles, in Mountain View County.

Former county councillor Gwen Day is one of the Paint the Barn Red in MVC project organizing committee members. Day and fellow organizer Dee Poisson appeared before the P&P to outline plans.

The committee’s vision is to “artistically document rural culture through paintings and stories of barns in Mountain View County.”

The plan is to publish the book at the end of the two-year project.

The paintings will be made by artists in the project.

Goals of the project include promoting tourism, history, rural culture, art, and connecting artists with rural culture and history, said Day.

The plan is to have the book include 40 original barn paintings and stories, as well as subsidiary pages of photographs.

Organizers plan to have 640 books published.

“The hope is that when we do the book launch we could hold an art show of paintings of the barns at the county office,” she said.

“If it turns out well, perhaps the county would like to purchase so many copies for their use as gifts for guest speakers or retiring staff. I’m thinking it will take us a couple of years at least to complete this project.

“Copies could be sold to each school and museum too, plus be for sale for individuals. The thought is the barn paintings could go on tour around Alberta with the Alberta Arts Foundation."

Organizers are looking for “a county staff person and/or councillor to join our committee, made up of farmers, artists,  writers and museum folks from all corners of the county.”

A Facebook page has been set up for the project: Paint the Barn Red in MVC.
