Bridge, culvertexpenses OK'd

The Mountain View County policies and priorities committee has passed a motion recommending council approve spending $515,682 for the construction of two culverts as part of the ongoing Acme Road project.

The Mountain View County policies and priorities committee has passed a motion recommending council approve spending $515,682 for the construction of two culverts as part of the ongoing Acme Road project.

During the June 5 committee meeting, members heard the funds will come from the provincial municipal sustainability initiative (MSI) program as part of the construction budget.

“There are two bridge-sized culverts that will be replaced during the Acme Road construction,” CAO Tony Martens said in a note to the committee. “The replacement of both of these structures was budgeted for in the Acme Road budget in case provincial funding for their replacement could not be secured. Funding the replacement of these two structures will not affect the overall budget of the project.”

The committee also passed a motion recommending that council authorize spending of $80,000 to complete repairs on four bridges (located southeast of Carstairs, east of Olds, northwest of Olds and northeast of Sundre).

“In the spring of 2013 Alberta Transportation informed the county that they will not longer be funding the local road bridge program,” said Martens. “This program would fund major repairs to bridges. In the past the county would submit a bridge request list every spring to secure funding for major repairs and new construction.”

Administration had made a request that the county release $80,000 from the bridge reserve to complete repairs on four bridges.

The committee also recommended that council cancel five other bridge projects because of the cut in provincial bridge funding.
