Mountain View County councillors hope to meet with various provincial government ministers during the upcoming 2019 Rural Municipalities of Alberta Association (RMA) annual convention.

During the Oct. 9 council meeting, councillors instructed administration to request meetings with ministers or ministerial officials from the departments of Agriculture and Forestry, Economic Development Trade, Transportation, Environment and Parks, and Municipal Affairs.

Council also outlined issues they would like to address with the respective ministers.

Agriculture and Forestry issues include agricultural plastic recycling alternatives, club root management, and pine beetle infestation and forest management area approval processes.

Environment and Parks issues include ag plastics recycling pilot project, asphalt paving plant provincial code of practice review, gravel code of practice, brownfields, and clarification of roles and responsibilities of regional groups when reviewing and enforcing provincial regulations.

Municipal Affairs issues include assessment review and impacts on rural municipalities, and the impact of potential provincial changes on municipality sustainability funding, including possible changes to the municipal sustainability initiative funding.

Transportation issues include high load corridors and the province’s three-year construction plan.

RMA represents 69 rural municipalities, including Mountain View County.

STRINGS & KEYS UPDATE

Meanwhile, councillors have been given an update on the Strings & Keys music education fund. The move also came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

The fund supports individuals requiring financial assistance for the cost of musical education. It is overseen by the multi-stakeholder Strings & Keys funding committee.

Projects eligible for funding include initiatives such as private music lessons, instrument rentals and/or maintenance, summer music programs, post-secondary music education, and travel to auditions or competitions.

The funding is directed to individuals who are residents or living within the geographical boundary of Mountain View County, up to and including age 25 and dedicated to developing musical talent and improving musical skills.

The annual amount of funding awarded is typically $3,000.

In 2019, the committee approved additional funding of $250 for an individual over the age of 25, bringing the total allocations in 2019 to $3,250.

Council accepted the update as information.
