County approves gravel pit application

The Red Deer County municipal planning commission has approved an application to start a gravel pit operation near Delburne.

The Red Deer County municipal planning commission has approved an application to start a gravel pit operation near Delburne.

On June 26 the commission granted approval for the pit, which would be located approximately one kilometre south of the Red Deer River on Highway 595 at SW 3-38-24-W4.

The pit will be mined in two phases, the first consisting of about 1.8 hectares and the second about 2,5 hectares. In all, about 145,000 tonnes of gravel would be mined from the site in total.

The land is currently pasture land with vegetation consisting of natural grasses and brush ground cover.

Nine people attended an open house on May 23 at the Valley Centre Community Hall. Objections raised to the proposed operation at the time included its potential impact on property values, garbage, and traffic noise.

People with objections to the MPC application approval can appeal to the subdivision and development appeal board, said Cynthia Cvik, Director of Planning and Development Services.
