Dog bylaw review

MVC councillors have instructed administration to review the county's current dog control bylaw and come back with suggestions on how working dogs, also known as livestock guardian dogs, can be better handled in the legislation.

The current bylaw section 6(f) states that no person "who is the owner or keeper of any dog shall allow such a dog to bark or howl excessively or otherwise disturb any person.î

More than 40 MVC residents recently signed a petition calling on the county to look at the issue, and in particular whether working dogs should be exempt from 6(f).

The petition reads as follows: "We the undersigned, as residents of Mountain View County, call upon council to relook at and amend the current dog control bylaw #3304, so that working protection and herding livestock dogs are exempted and can continue to do their job for ranchers and farmers across this county without concern.î
