More than 20 dogs and their houndsmen have competed in field trials in Bearberry, west of Sundre.

The Alberta Tree Hound Association has raised more than $3,000 in past years from the fundraising event. However, the amount raised this year was not available at press time.

The event was held from June 7 – 9 in Bearberry for the second year, said Jason Martyn, president of the association.

“Every houndsman kind of around the country comes and it's a dog race more than anything. They race their dogs in competition on a scent drag,” said Martyn.

“What happens is we lay a scent down within a three- to six- kilometre circle and the dogs have to run it. The first dogs that cross the line and the first dog that trees it will advance on to the finals.”

Before Bearberry, the event was held in Pincher Creek for many years, he said.

“We do it mainly just to get houndsmen together and unite in a friendly atmosphere,” he said.

In past years, the event has attracted about 80 to 100 houndsmen and their dogs, he said.
