Fire departments respond to 1,200 calls

The five fire departments in Mountain View County responded to a total of 1,278 calls for service in 2012, including 556 in rural communities.

Statistics for all the departments were presented to councillors during the July 3 policies and priorities committee meeting.

Councillors had requested the statistics as information on the number and types of calls the Olds, Didsbury, Sundre, Carstairs and Cremona departments have been responding to.

Mountain View County shares the cost of running the departments with the other municipalities in the county on a per capita basis.

Carstairs responded to 99 rural and 101 urban calls; Sundre 112 rural and 98 urban; Cremona 117 rural and 29 urban; Didsbury 129 rural and 146 urban, and Olds 99 rural and 348 urban.

• Carstairs' rural calls included eight for EMS first response, two for medical assist, 39 for motor vehicle collisions (MVC), four for five investigations, 12 for fires, 22 for grass and rubbish fires. The department also responded to three calls for mutual aid from Rocky View County.

• Didsbury's rural calls included three for EMS first response, 25 for medical assist, 33 for MVCs, 13 for fire investigations, six for fires, and 11 for grass and rubbish fires. The department responded to 33 mutual aid calls in Mountain View County.

• Olds' rural calls included seven for EMS first response, 11 for medical assist, 35 for MVCs, four for fire investigations, 10 for fires, and eight for rubbish and grass fires. The department responded to 12 mutual aid calls in Mountain View County, and seven in Red Deer County.

• Sundre's rural calls included 41 for medical assistance, 16 for MVCs, 12 for fire investigations, 20 for fires, and nine for rubbish and grass fires. The department responded to five mutual aid calls in the county, as well as 13 mutual aid calls in Clearwater County, seven in the MD of Big Horn, and one in Rocky View County.

• The Cremona fire department did not submit statistical breakdowns of its specific calls.

During the July 3 committee meeting, councillors directed administration to bring back details of each department's gratuity policy for review at a future council meeting.
