Mountain View County helping neighbouring municipalities

Mountain View County will be sending equipment and possibly staff to the Municipal District of Bighorn, southwest of MVC, starting June 25 to help with disaster recovery efforts there.

“Obviously they've been hit more significantly than we were. The road to Mountain Aire Lodge is completely gone,” Reeve Bruce Beattie said Monday morning.

Indications are that MVC escaped any major damage due to flooding of the Red Deer and Little Red Deer rivers, he said.

The local state of emergency in MVC will remain in effect until Friday.

“It expires on its own, so we may just let that run out so we are able to access equipment if we need it,” he said.

The MVC emergency operations centre shut down on Sunday “because most of the major things have been taken care of.

“Our only concern now in terms of access is Coyote Creek on Rge. Rd. 55,” he said. “There is still significant flow through that road and so that road is still closed and evacuation is still in place for that area. We are monitoring the situation.”

The Water Valley campground on the Little Red Deer River remained closed Monday.

Both the MVC-owned Sundre airport and Westward Ho campground have reopened.

The new Big Prairie Bridge, under construction on the Little Red Deer River downstream of Water Valley, was not damaged by high water, he said.

MVC is working with the Town of Sundre to provide assistance to district residents who may have been impacted, he said.

“If anyone needs to get their water wells tested there will be bottles from Alberta Health available for pickup at the Sundre town office,” he said.

“They can also get forms for disaster relief at the town office. We will also have them available at the county office. The key message is keep all your receipts and documents for the applications.”
