MVC land-use bylaw review underway

A review of Mountain View County's land-use bylaw now underway will hopefully lead to a more user-friendly updated version of the legislation, says Reeve Bruce Beattie.

“I think it is going well,” said Beattie. “It's really a process of trying to simplify and make sure the bylaw is consistent with our municipal development plan and consistent across the documentation.

“The municipal planning commission (MPC) went through it last year and tried to address some of the concerns and were able to do that. Now we are going back through it to see if we can eliminate some of what we think are unnecessary regulations and make it a little more simple document that people can work with.”

The land-use bylaw covers such things as dwelling density, occupancy, landscaping, parking requirements, signage, commercial and industrial guidelines, and site regulations.

A committee made up of council and members of the MPC started the review of the bylaw last week.

The committee will meet again in June, although an exact date has not yet been set.

“If there are any issues members of the committee want to raise before that time, then they will have the opportunity to do that,” he said.

The public will have opportunities to have input into the changes, he said.

“We will have to have a public hearing because it will have to be an update of the bylaw,” he said. “We will go through the same process. We will have first reading and then we will have a public hearing at that time.

“If things go well I expect that we will have it done by early summer.”
