Pest-proof bins considered

Mountain View County residents interested in keeping wildlife out of their garbage cans may soon have the opportunity to pay for more secure bins.

During the regularly scheduled Aug. 13 council meeting, councillors passed a motion instructing administration to come up with a bylaw that would create a new extra fee rate for wildlife-proof bins.

“The bins are built specifically to keep the animals out, to deter the animals,” Greg Wiens, director of corporate services, told councillors. “The bins are designed to withstand most attempts by animals to get in them.”

In a note to council, CAO Tony Martens added: “There appears to be a demand for animal deterrent waste bins for county residents. The Mountain View Regional Waste Commission has done some preliminary investigations and believes the additional cost per month of providing animal deterrent bins to be around $10.

“This is primarily a question of service levels so we are looking for council's direction. Based on council's direction, and the finalization of the rate by the commission, amendments to the solid waste collection bylaw will be brought back to council.”

The exact extra cost of having the new bins will be outlined in the proposed bylaw, which will come before council at a future date.
