Pit reclamation OK'd

Mountain View County council has approved the spending of $25,000 for the preparation of a reclamation design plan for the Sturrock gravel pit.

Mountain View County council has approved the spending of $25,000 for the preparation of a reclamation design plan for the Sturrock gravel pit.

During the June 26 council meeting, councillors heard that the pit, located just off Highway 27 halfway between Sundre and Olds (NW-36-32-4-W5) has been in operation since 1985 and is now depleted.

“Due to the highly visible location of this pit along Highway 27, operations services is proposing that the reclamation pit plans completed in 2008 be updated and the project become ready in 2013,” said CAO Tony Martens.

“The plans must be completed to Alberta Environment standards so they can be submitted after the pit is reclaimed so that a reclamation certificate can be received on the pit.

“Once the plans are completed and an updated estimate is received, operations will bring this to council for review for possible completion in 2013. Currently the project is scheduled for 2014.”
