Sundre, parts of Red Deer County set high temperature records Sunday

SUNDRE - The Sundre area and parts of Red Deer County were among 12 locales in Alberta to hit a new record high temperature Sunday or tie an existing record.

According to Environment Canada, the temperature rose to 29.8 C at the Sundre Airport on Sept. 8.

That’s a new record for the date, the federal agency noted, since records in the area started being kept in 1993. 

The previous record high for the area on Sept. 8 was 26.9 C set in 2011.

Parts of Red Deer County also broke high temperature records Sunday.

The temperature at the Red Deer Regional Airport in Springbrook, a hamlet in Red Deer County, rose to a high of 31.1 C on Sept. 8.

The old record of 30.0 C was set in 1923. Records in this area have been kept since 1904.

The following areas set or tied a daily maximum temperature record on September 8, 2024 (temperature values given in degrees Celsius):

• Camrose area - New record of 31.2. Old record of 29.7 set in 2011.  Records in this area have been kept since 1921.

• Edmonton area - New record of 30.8. Old record of 30.3 set in 1981. Records in this area have been kept since 1880.

• Edmonton International Airport area - New record of 30.6. Old record of 30.3 set in 1981. Records in this area have been kept since 1959.

• Henderson Creek area - New record of 27.3. Old record of 26.4 set in 2006. Records in this area have been kept since 1995.

• Lloydminster area - Tied record of 31.4 set in 2017. Records in this area have been kept since 1952.

• Lac La Biche area - New record of 30.9. Old record of 30.5 set in 2011. Records in this area have been kept since 1944.

• Milk River area - New record of 33.1. Old record of 31.3 set in 2011. Records in this area have been kept since 1994.

• Rocky Mountain House area - New record of 29.1. Old record of 28.9 set in 1981. Records in this area have been kept since 1915.

• Vegreville area - New record of 32.2. Old record of 32.0 set in 1981. Records in this area have been kept since 1918.

• Waterton Park area - New record of 30.0. Old record of 29.2 set in 2017. Records in this area have been kept since 1976.

Environment Canada notes the temperature records reported here have been derived from a selection of historical stations in each geographic area that were active during the period of record and may contain preliminary or unofficial information.
