The Olds Athletics split a pair of games last week in Parkland Baseball League action, losing a tight defensive battle, 2-1, to the Innisfail Indians Friday and winning 7-1 Wednesday against the Irricana Canadians.
The split gives the Athletics a 3-6 record for the season thus far.
On Friday in Innisfail Cody Edwards put in a good effort on the mound for the Athletics, but came out on the losing end. The Athletics were down 2-1 going into the seventh inning, managing to tie it up. The Indians also got a run in their last at-bat to secure the victory.
“It was a defensive battle. We both hit the ball well, Cody Edwards pitched well for us,” said Jeremy Tookey, the Athletics' spokesman.
On the strength of a solid pitching performance from Mike Howden, the Athletics powered their way to a 7-1 win on Wednesday against the Canadians in Irricana.
Howden struck out nine to earn the victory.
Cody Walker's two-run home run in the third inning sparked the offence, giving the Athletics a 3-1 lead at the time.
“From there, the offence came alive. We played well. We showed up with nine guys and still won,” Tookey said.
