Broncos women's soccer team reaches playoffs

The most successful season in the history of Broncos soccer will continue into the playoffs.

The most successful season in the history of Broncos soccer will continue into the playoffs.

Last weekend, the women clinched their first-ever ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) post-season berth with a pair of victories: 3-1 over Lakeland College on Saturday and 2-1 over Red Deer College on Sunday.

It was a momentous breakthrough for the program, now five years old and into its third season under head coach Macky Singh.

"It's huge in terms of development of soccer within the college and the community," he said.

This year, the women won their first regular season match under Singh's tenure. They would go on to finish 5-4-1, third in the ACAC South.

On both sides of the ball, the Broncos' 21 goals scored and 19 allowed in 10 matches are their best-ever totals.

Individually, striker Jamie Flett's 10 goals puts her near the top of the ACAC. As well, goalkeeper Amy Ofredi finishes among the league leaders in saves and save percentage.

Singh said this recent success is a boon to local interest in soccer and will help with future recruiting.

Olds College now heads to Concordia University of Edmonton for the ACAC championship. Their first opponent is Grande Prairie Regional College on Friday at 12 p.m.

The men also reached a significant milestone over the weekend, winning their first match with Singh as coach. They beat Red Deer College 3-2.

"After the win, on the way back home on the bus, a few players came up to me and said that feeling was awesome. They want that feeling again next year," Singh said. "I think that really inspired them, to know what winning feels like."
