Coach low key after first Broncos win

You could forgive Macky Singh if he wanted to celebrate his women's soccer team's 4-2 victory over Lethbridge College in Olds on Sept. 11. That win was Singh's first since taking over Olds College's soccer program in 2014.

You could forgive Macky Singh if he wanted to celebrate his women's soccer team's 4-2 victory over Lethbridge College in Olds on Sept. 11.

That win was Singh's first since taking over Olds College's soccer program in 2014.

But the Broncos coach was rather stoic when speaking about the feat.

"It's positive, don't get me wrong. It's the first win since the program started in 2012," Singh said. "We haven't had a win since, until yesterday. While it's exciting, while it's great, that monkey's off our back, we need to make sure it wasn't a one-off or a fluke. Making sure we follow up on that victory. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves."

Olds College's Jamie Flett led the team with three goals that day, two of them assisted by Sydney Becker. Rachel Brodie scored the other goal.

This year's women's team has six returning players plus a redshirt. Flett said they've gradually become more comfortable playing together.

On Sunday, they managed to get a jump on the Kodiaks, with Flett's first goal coming 1:50 into the match.

Flett, 18, is a first-year student in the school's veterinary technician assistant program. She is one of three sisters from Winnipeg on the team, including older sister Jasmine and her fraternal twin Jessie.

She said she was originally recruited as a goalkeeper but developed a scoring touch while playing with her sisters. She has scored four goals in her first two games.

"We're always playing one-on-one and stuff like that," she said. I guess over the years if there was another goalie on the team, we'd play (half the game) so I just learned the skills like that."

Singh said the big difference with this squad compared to previous years will be its ability to play out from the back.

The term refers to starting an attack from deep in the backfield, using passes to advance the ball from defenders to midfielders to strikers. This is in contrast to using one long pass from the keeper. This playing style is made possible by having players with a higher skill level, who can keep possession of the ball, he said.

The Broncos host SAIT at noon this Saturday at Normie Kwong Park. Singh is hoping to keep his team's momentum going.

We just have to keep pushing forward and making sure we don't get complacent," he said. "The SAIT women are probably the strongest in our conference right now. It's going to be a tough game."
