Olds College announced on April 24 that Bob Murray will take over as acting director of the school’s athletics, health and wellness department from Greg Lendvay.
Having joined the college in 2006, Lendvay offered his resignation the morning of the announcement.
Murray was previously a supervisor in the school’s athletics department for three years and, prior to that, was an athletics programmer for two years.
He also has past experience as an athletic director at Crandall University in New Brunswick as well as Alberta’s Prairie Bible College in the Canadian Colleges Athletics Association.
At a time of belt-tightening and cutting programs at Alberta’s post-secondary schools—Olds College’s Alberta Colleges Athletic League volleyball team is being axed for next season—Murray said he’ll focus on finding ways to keep pushing for the success of the college’s athletic programs.
"It’s at times like this where you really set down and recognize what your priorities are as you continue to build your program," he said, adding the decision to cut the volleyball program was partly due to college budget considerations and because the league is slowly winding down its volleyball program. "Any decisions we’ll make in regards to how our athletics budget will work will be based on primarily the institution’s values that they’re looking at and then, as well, the priorities that we’ve set out to continue to build our athletics program."
Murray also said Lendvay made the decision to leave the program based on personal reasons and that Lendvay had made many "sacrifices" for the program over the years.
"It was a change of season for Greg. He had put a lot of time and effort into building the program to what it is today," he said. "When he addressed our staff this morning he noted he wanted time to be with his family and pursue professional opportunities that allow for that."
The college will hold an open competition at a yet-to-be determined time to find a permanent director and Murray said he would apply for the job.
