A member of the Meadow Creek Equestrian Vaulting Club near Olds is the Alberta Sport Development Centre – Central (ASDC-C) Athlete of the Month for June.

Avery Malone, 15, has been competing in equestrian vaulting for seven years.

According to the ASDC-C, equestrian vaulting is basically gymnastics and dance performed on and in harmony with a moving horse.

Recently, Malone competed in Blackfalds, finishing first in the team competition and fourth in women's canter B.

In April, Malone finished sixth in the junior 1 star category during a competition in Gilroy, Calif.

Malone is coached by Jeanine and Angelique van der Sluijs, both of whom were former ASDC-Central athletes.

“Avery is one of the strongest athletes in the ASDC-Central athlete enhancement program,” an ASDC-C news release says.

“Her strong work ethic combined with her athletic gifts and her training experiences with ASDC-Central will only see her continue to grow and develop in her athletic career. Congratulations Avery.”
