The 38th annual Olds Farmers and Farmerettes bonspiels were a great success once again, according to past chair Gene Leonard.

The two spiels were held Feb. 13-17 at the Olds Curling Club.

"It was excellent, a good turnout," Leonard says, noting rinks came from as far as Innisfail and Three Hills.

This year there were 36 men's teams, on par with previous years, and 16 ladies' teams, down two to four rinks from other years.

"We were down a little bit (in the ladies' teams), probably because of the Family Day holiday," Leonard says.

However, he says it would be difficult for organizers to move the bonspiels to another date because there are so many other ones on the calendar.

Following are the winning rinks:

Farmers

A event: Greg Reese, Rick Phillips Jr., Barry Reese and Lorne Hersberger from Cervus Equipment.

B event: Dennis Roemmele, Brian Krall, Gene Leonard and Ken Taks from Future Ag.

C event: Ken Weseen, George Glazer, Devin Weseen and Jeff Miller from UFA Petroleum.

D event: Colin Jorsvick, Grant Hindbo, Gary Wieben and Troy Aitken from Olds Regional Exhibition.

Farmerettes

A event: Deana Jensen, Marg Bergsma, Laurie Blundell and Val Schmidt from S.T. Transport Ltd.

B event: Marg Kline, Sharon Fulkerth, Bev Craig and Brandy Rambo from Niemeyers Welding.

C event: Angie Spreeman, Peggy Freeman, Joanne Prysunka and Karley Nagel from MNP.

The draw to the button competition was won by the rink of Stirling McLeod, Kent Walker, Jason Adams and Neil Boles.

Organizers are very grateful for all the sponsorship they received for the event and to Brian Winter for "the excellent ice."
