Olds College's first Broncos Scholarship Breakfast was a success, director of athletics Linda Henderson says.

So she's pretty certain they'll hold another one next year.

The purpose of the event is to help the college's athletic department raise at least $100,000 for scholarships.

Henderson says the goal was to attract 75 to 100 people and about 80 people attended the Dec. 3 event in the Frank Grisdale Hall gym. So she's anticipating another scholarship breakfast next year.

"We had 80 people who actually came and contributed financially to this program. Our target was around that mark. It was between 75 and 100, so we hit it," Henderson said.

"But with the weather today, it was a bit hard getting some people out. So even though it wasn't full capacity, we did get the scholarship money from people."

Brianne Jenner, who was hired this year as a student athlete mentor under the Head To Head mentorship program, was the keynote speaker.

Henderson said she did well, so organizers will likely ask another Head To Head mentor — perhaps a male — to speak next year.

"One of the things we wanted to do was start small, so we started in the small gymnasium that had the history and the alumni aspect to it. And then we want to grow it, similar to what other organizations do in the ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) across the province," she said.

Henderson said proceeds from the breakfast, combined with those from an online auction planned for later this year, as well as via the booster club, and from the school's annual fall golf tournament go toward financing the scholarships.

"We have a mandate of $100,000 that we have to raise every year toward our scholarship (program) in order to be able to maintain and offer the scholarships that we do have in place," Henderson said.
