Flyers compete hard at provincials

The Innisfail Bantam AA Flyers provincial journey came to an end earlier then hoped but despite just missing playoffs the team celebrated a few big successes over the weekend in Camrose.

During the first game of the weekend the team got a good taste for the high level of competition in the tournament when they tied the Camrose Bulldogs 2-2 last Thursday afternoon.

Early Friday morning the team faced off against CAC Edmonton, the team that eventually went on to win the provincial title. The Flyers gave the northern team a tough run in their second round robin game beating Edmonton 4-3 and handing them their only loss of the tournament.

Unfortunately the team couldn’t carry the momentum through to the evening taking a 10-2 loss against Cold Lake, a team that went on to play in the semi-final game.

The Flyers played their last game on Saturday morning against St. Albert during which they took a 4-1 loss to knock them out of a playoff spot.

The Flyers ended up fourth in their round robin pool of five teams.

The provincial tournament was a great experience for the team, said team manager Amanda Wood.

“It was a great level of hockey that they could obviously play at but it is just hard to play at it for four games,” said Wood.

“We were sad to be done early, but it was a really good weekend.”

This is the second year in a row that the Bantam AA Flyers team has qualified for provincials.
