The Grizzlys hit the ice this past weekend for their first regular game of the year, dropping the season opener 1-5 against the Calgary Canucks.
The away game was the first look at the Grizzlys' new roster under a new coaching staff, which boasts 12 rookies, including Didsbury native Mitchell Visser.
The Grizzlys dressed 19 players for the Sunday afternoon game, but a plague of illnesses and injuries meant the team was missing captain Chase Olsen, forward Jared Power, D-men Hayden Struick and Josh Michener, and returning goalie Andrew Henderson.
In the crease was rookie netminder Josh Brindza, an 18-year-old Edmonton native.
The only Grizz goal of the evening was scored by second-year forward Brad Girard, off Olds newcomer Spencer McHardy who played two seasons for the Camrose Kodiaks.
The Grizzlys will face off again this Friday 7 p.m., in a tough home opener against the Whitecourt Wolverines, before a redemption match on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. against the Canucks, this time on home ice.
