In the world of sports triathlon is one that challenges an athlete's level of fitness, ability and endurance.

The 16th annual Innisfail Triathlon will see participants from across the province swim, bike and run in the event on Sept. 10. Athletes will start and finish at the Innisfail Aquatic Centre.

“Everything's going well but registration is down a bit compared to previous years,” said Dorene Loughlin, race director for the event. “We're currently sitting at 118 individuals and four teams, for (a total of) 130 participants. Typically we're around 200 people.”

This year's triathlon is again open to children, families and individuals of all levels and capabilities, said Loughlin. “The sprint triathlon is our main event. It is a 750-metre swim in the pool, a 20-kilometre bike ride and a five-kilometre run,” she said, noting they also offer the ‘tri-it' race, an entry level event for children and families to help introduce them to the sport, what's involved and what it's like to complete one.

The triathlon is open to athletes 16 years and older and the ‘tri-it' race features athletes 12 years and older, she added.

“Part of our philosophy as a group is really about family fun and encouraging people to get into the sport that may be new to it,” said Loughlin. “We're a very non-competitive event.”

The route and distances for the Innisfail Triathlon will be the same as last year's event, she noted, adding Sept. 1 is the cut-off date for registration. Organizers hope to reach a sell out number of 225 people that includes athletes from across Alberta and many from Innisfail and the surrounding region.

“We'd love to see more local athletes. Last year we had 24 local athletes,” she said, adding people can participate as individuals or in teams.

“It's about people staying active, healthy and challenging themselves and their own limits,” said Loughlin. “It's a personal accomplishment that people can be proud of.”
