The junior varsity girls basketball team ended its season short of achieving its goal, but pleased with the season's outcome nevertheless.
After a hard fought battle with Didsbury in the final match of the South Central Zones March 10 in High River, the Sundre team finished in second place, to claim a silver medal.
“I think for some of the girls it was a little disappointing but we had a great season and I'm proud of them,” said Kent Janz who co-coached the team with Larry Nielson.
The girls were gunning for a zone banner this year, with four Grade 10 girls staying back in junior varsity to do just that even though they could have played varsity ball, said Janz.
“They chose to be there and they said they wanted to win the JV banner,” said Janz. “It just shows their character. They're strong players.”
This year's team had no Grade 11s on it, even though junior varsity includes that grade. The team was comprised of five Grade 9s and seven Grade 10s.
They got a strong start, he said, going undefeated for the first half of the season and ended the regular season with just three losses.
Going into playoffs a couple of key players suffered injuries, he said, setting them back a bit.
But the team fought on, he said.
“I'm so proud of how hard they worked. They really came together as a team.”
