Klinck narrowly misses triple jump standard

It's not often that Laura Klinck doesn't finish first at a track and field meet.

It's not often that Laura Klinck doesn't finish first at a track and field meet.

The local athlete competed at the 2016 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Edmonton this month, where she finished fourth in her qualifying round for the Junior triple jump.

She leapt a personal-best 11.21 metres but missed the 11.40-m qualifying standard required to advance to the finals.

"You can't be too disappointed. It's good to see how the other girls do in competition that day as well," Klinck said.

"I didn't expect to get first coming into this event because I knew a few of the other competitors. I knew they could jump pretty well."

This was the second time she attended Junior Nationals, competing last year as an underage athlete.

Klinck trains with the Calgary Warriors Track Club and practised as many as four nights per week to prepare for the meet.

About to enter her Grade 12 year at Olds High School, she was this year's ASAA Intermediate triple jump champion, with an eye toward becoming a collegiate track athlete.
