A new head coach has been hired to take over the women's fledgling hockey program at Olds College, according to a media release issued last Wednesday, Aug. 16.
Chris Leeming will take the Broncos' reins this season, after former head coach Sarah Hillworth left in June to rebuild the University of New Brunswick program.
According to last Wednesday's release, Leeming played in the Ontario Junior Hockey system from 2004 to 2010, before spending four years as assistant coach for the University of Windsor Lancers women's program. He is also a recent graduate of the University of Windsor, where he earned an education degree.
"Chris is a very knowledgeable coach who will help the team's skill level, mental game, and intensity," said the Broncos' athletic director Linda Henderson in the release. "The goal is always to make it to ACAC playoffs, and with a stronger and more experienced team than we've had in the past two years, it is definitely possible."
Leeming will begin wrangling the two-year-old hockey program ñ one of five teams in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference ñ on Sept. 1.
"I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with such an enthusiastic management group, and team of student-athletes that are determined to win," he said in the release. "I'd like to acknowledge the tremendous work Sarah did to bring this program to its current state, as starting up a new team in the ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) is no easy task."
"My goal is to build off of the foundation that she has created here, and further develop a team culture and identity that stems from a passion for the game, thrives on integrity, and maximizes the potential of our student-athletes."
