Numbers down at Rotary Golf tourney

Numbers at this year's 16th annual Rotary Club of Olds golf tournament were down due to the tough economy, but organizing committee chair Craig Witcher says all things considered, it was a success.

The tournament was held June 17 at the Olds Central Highlands Golf Course.

A total of 118 golfers participated, down one team from last year.

Figures are still being tabulated, but Witcher says initial indications are that estimated gross dollars taken in are down about 11 per cent, compared to last year.

“As a committee, we anticipated a reduced amount being raised, based on the economic environment facing people and businesses,” Witcher says.

“Even with the reduced numbers, we feel our tournament was a success. This was due to the support from the volunteers, golfers and sponsors.”

He noted revenue from the tournament helps the club “continue to provide financial support to great causes in our communities.”

This year, organizers made a few changes to the tournament to keep it fresh.

For example, golfers had the option this year to participate in a Par 3 poker game.

“It went over well,” Witcher said, noting it attracted several participants.

“It added another element to our tournament that people enjoyed. We will continue to look at options for future golf tournaments to keep things fresh and encourage avid golfers and those new to the game to participate.”
