Both Olds High School and Olds Koinonia Christian School placed well at the senior regional track meet in Sundre on Wednesday and will each be sending several athletes to the zone meet in Calgary on Wednesday.

Adam Hogarth, coach for OHS, said the results were better than expected with most of the team going to zones.

“It was a surprise. I was expecting about 15 or so … getting closer to that 20 mark was a pleasant surprise. A lot of the relay teams did really well, all the vaulters made it through and … Carson Jorgensen and Daniela Aguillara (did well) in their events,” he said.

Jorgensen competed in the 3,000 metres, 1,500 metres, javelin, and anchored the four x 400 metre relay team while Aguillara competed in the 400 and 800 metre run.

Erin Schultz, Shaelyn Moritz, Kevin Spicer, Logan Bullock, Alex Rommele, Mitchell Ormann, Josh Sears, Dakota Fleming, Abgail Allen, Kayla Milang, Jamige Boom, Jess Reid, Courtney Schafer, Alex Groves, Tanner Robertson, Carson Jorgensen, Daniela Aguilar, Brittany Hepp and Bowen Corsiatto are all headed to the zone meet.

Hogarth said the OHS athletes will be facing some stiff competition from Calgary-area schools at the zone meet, but said there should be some athletes from OHS going on to the provincial meet.

“It's much more competitive once you get to zones. (Calgary-area schools) have strong club programs because they're so close to the city. You have to step it up here, (but) … anywhere between eight athletes to a dozen could go on to provincials. It could be a very strong, quality year for us,” Hogarth said.

Results for Olds Koinonia Christian School were good, according to track coach Ken Terpstra. He believes the school will be sending more students to the zone championships than it has in many years.

“I thought it was pretty good. It went well as far as (sending students to zones). Our goal is always to try to get as many kids to zones as we can,” he said.

Lindsay Worrall, April Onishenko, Karleton Moench, Tyler Jansen, Garreth Archer, Zach Elliot, Chris Newman and Logan Dejax will all be attending the zone meet from OKCS.
