The Olds Spitfires Peewee A team defended their provincial title, capturing gold for a second straight year at the Tier II championship, held in St. Albert, July 21-23.
The weekend started with a tough 13-10 loss in a rain-shortened game against the Parkland Twins, but head coach Trevor Hamilton said the team was able to bounce back and got on a roll.
The Spitfires won the remainder of their round robin games, beating the teams from Devon, St. Albert and Edson to advance to the final, where they faced the host St. Albert Cardinals, who also held a 3-1 record
Olds grabbed an early lead and clinched the gold medal game with a decisive 15-5 victory, with a team that only had one returner from last year's champions.
"I wouldn't say we had any standout players in the final game," said Hamilton. "We had some decent pitching and the fielders backed it up, making some great plays ñ everyone was hitting well, and we were able to jump out to an early lead and hang on.
"Everyone came together to get the win," said Hamilton.
