Two professional golfers are taking a swing at a new pilot project aimed at generating interest in the sport at a high school level. The project, a joint effort with phys. ed. teachers at Innisfail Jr./Sr. High School started two weeks ago.
Last Tuesday afternoon the group of about 15 boys had their third class of six. They focused on the art form of a swing and how it correlates to individual golf clubs, with the group of keen Grade 9 golfers out to learn some tips from professionals, Jim Boomer and Wayne Dick. "We are both interested in seeing it (the program) grow, we need to start making golf more attractive to them and this is a great age to start," said Boomer. The students are "not too young they will be distracted yet not too old they can just drive to the golf course on their own," he said.
"If there is enough interest we will look at continuing the project next school year and possibly starting in the fall,"
Boomer mentioned.
This marks the first year of the project and for now it is slotted into the students' schedules. The project may grow to become an extracurricular activity, but for now it is still in the early stages of growth.
"The golfers showed us how to hit the ball properly, positioning of the club and how to aim," said Leland Nelson as he spiritedly practiced his swing in the gym on Tuesday afternoon.
"It's really fun and interesting to learn from the pros," said Riley Jamison voicing he had only been out golfing with his parents before the pilot project.
