The Olds Rapids swim team sent a pair of swimmers to the 2016 Speedo Alberta Age Group and Senior Championships earlier this month.

The provincial meet was held from June 30 to July 3 in Calgary.

While there, Shane Issler from Trochu finished 10th overall in the 50-metre (m) butterfly and 13th in the 100-m butterfly, breaking several club records.

Victoria Wagstaff, 17, also swam, setting four club records in 50-m freestyle, 400-m freestyle, 50-m backstroke and 100-m backstroke.

Considering it was his first appearance at provincials, Issler, 15, was happy with his performance, despite hoping to do better.

"I was still very impressed with myself. Just getting this far, I wasn't really expecting that at the beginning of the year," he said.

"It was a little bit different. It's weird seeing that many fast people at a meet. Usually I'm one of the fastest ones. So it was definitely a new experience."

Issler is a new member of the Rapids, previously swimming with the Three Hills Neons.

He said he's become a better swimmer since making that move.

"Just to have a new coach's perspective and swim with more people at my level. I think it definitely helped me improve."

Gordon said the Neons club has a short season and Issler joined the Rapids to keep swimming throughout the year.

"Hopefully next year he'll continue to improve with both direction from his coach in Three Hills and with the Rapids. We're really excited to work with him and the Neons because it's more about the athletes than it is the overall program."
