Peewee baseball in Olds is two times golden this year, after the Tier I AA team brought home another provincial championship in early August, which sent them to the 2017 Western Canada Baseball Championships Aug. 18-20.

The Peewee AA Spitfires were almost undefeated in regular season play, dropping only a single game to the Wainwright Outlaws, before heading to provincials in Grande Prairie, Aug. 4-6.

The team went undefeated in provincial play, smashing four home runs out of the park in the process. They won their semifinal round against Grande Prairie and went on to redeem their only season loss in the gold-medal game, this time defeating the Outlaws 4-11 for the provincial title.

The Peewee AA prospects started spring training in school gyms prior to the season, dusting off their gloves three nights a week. The pre-season training even included some conditioning and nutrition planning with local trainer Jamie-Dee Marshall.

Tryouts were held in April to narrow the field and this year's winning roster included two out-of-towners and two female players.

In all the Spitfires won 25 of their 28 games played throughout the season, facing their toughest competition at last week's western championships in Kamloops, B.C., where they went 2-2 against teams representing B.C., Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the host.

In addition, one Spitfire doubled her action at the western finals, playing for two teams. Brynlee Rice also qualified for the Alberta U-14 girls' team, which finished second after losing the gold medal game to B.C.
