Broncos win curling bronze
The Olds College Broncos men's curling team came home from the weekend's ACAC championships in Vermilion with a bronze medal.
Despite only winning one game out of five on the weekend, the Broncos won the game that mattered when they beat Augustana 4-2 in the bronze medal game after losing the three-four playoff game to eventual champion Red Deer College 11-3.
In the round robin, the Broncos went 0-3, losing 7-4 to NAIT, 5-2 to Augustana and 5-3 to Red Deer.
The Broncos team consists of lead Kory Roberge, seconds Connor Layton and Adam Wutzke, third Travis Paulgaard and skip Elliott Mansell. Roberge was named to the ACAC men's all-star team.
Grande Prairie won the women's title while Augustana won the mixed championship. Olds College didn't qualify in the women's division and didn't ice a mixed team this season.
Spartan wrestlers off to provincials
Olds High School wrestlers will be carrying local hopes at the ASAA provincial championships this weekend in Stony Plain.
Leading the lines for the Spartans will be Amber Maschke who took the rural provincial championship last week in Olds in the 57kg category. Also taking part will be Shayley Harris in the 80kg division while Sarah Hunder will wrestle in the 70kg division.
Harris won silver and Hunder bronze at the rural provincials to help the three-member team take the 3A girls team title.
It will be the first full ASAA provincials for all three rookies.
Wrestling begins Friday afternoon and continues through to Saturday's medal round at Memorial Composite in Stony Plain.
Olds junior lacrosse team a go
The Olds Junior Stingers are back.
The tier III junior B lacrosse team will be back in black and gold this season after a one-year absence from the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
According to Olds Lacrosse president Gary Gaudette the team had a good response to a player call and has strong numbers already committed to the season and will play in the 14-team tier III division of the RMLL. Mike Bouma, the coach of the midget Stingers last season, will coach the Junior Stingers.
Training for the season will begin on March 15 at the Olds College gymnasium at Frank Grisdale Hall with the league season slated to begin in late April.
In addition to the Stingers, the league will feature four Calgary teams – the Axemen Mavericks, Sabrecats 1, Sabrecats 2 and the Wranglers – along with the Brooks Drillers, Crowsnest Pass Ravens, High River Heat, Lethbridge Barracudas, Medicine Hat Sun Devils, Okotoks Icemen, Rockyview Silvertips, Strathmore Venom and expansion cousins the Lacoka Locos.
Players come from the Olds Lacrosse area (which includes Sundre), but also from associations such as Didsbury, Bowden and Innisfail. The latter has a tier II junior team and players who want to play the tier III level are eligible to play for the Olds team.
