CARSTAIRS-DIDSBURY - A quartet of swimmers from the area will be competing in the Canada Summer Games later this week in Winnipeg.
Stephen McMurter, 16, and Sarah Schmick, 22, from Carstairs, Angela Lowther, 17, from Crossfield and Wesley Wilks, 16, from Didsbury are all representing Team Alberta.
McMurter, Lowther and Wilks all swim during the winter with the Olds Rapids Swim Club under the direction of head coach Clint Stevens. Even though Stevens is not involved with coaching at the Canada Games, he will be cheering on his team members.
"Our season ended on June 17, so as far as their training from then until now I'm not sure," said Stevens. "Wesley trains with the Didsbury Aqua Jets during the summer. From what I understand he's doing what he does and that's train hard."
Stevens said that he has enjoyed coaching all three athletes with the Olds Rapids.
"They're awesome kids," he said. "They're all awesome. They are probably some of the hardest working kids I've coached."
Stevens expects the local swimmers to do well at the games.
"It'll be interesting to see how they stack up against the rest of the country," he said. "In Alberta they're ranked very well."
Wilks will be swimming the 50M freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke and 100M backstroke.
McMurter will swim the 50M freestyle, 100M freestyle, 50M backstroke, 100M backstroke and 50M breaststroke.
Schmick is competing in the 50M freestyle, 100M freestyle, 50M breaststroke, 50M backstroke and 100M backstroke.
Lowther will swim the 200M freestyle, 100M freestyle, 100M backstroke, 100M butterfly, 100M breaststroke, 50M freestyle and 200M individual medley.
