OLDS — Two Olds Spitfires baseball players, Jaxon Kaniusus (U14) and Thomas Hill (U16), were named to Team Alberta for the Western Canadian Prospects Series, held during the Sept. 1 long weekend in St. Albert.

Hill and a St. Albert player were the only two 2009-born players to make the U16 team, Olds Minor Baseball Association vice-president Jason Jaffray says.

The Western Canada Prospect Series was first held in 2022 with three teams participating in the event: BC, Alberta, and Manitoba.

They played a series of games with the goal of being identified for the Baseball Canada Cup the following summer. In 2023, Team Saskatchewan joined the event, expanding the competition.

In 2024, the event continued with the same teams: B.C., Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Additionally, a 14U division was added for this year.
