Rural Olds resident Zachary Latimer won a bronze medal during the Canadian Junior Weightlifting Championships Jan. 20 in Halifax.

Latimer won that medal in the 77 kilogram (kg) body weight category with successful lifts of 105 kg in the snatch and 130 kg in the clean & jerk for a combined total weight of 235 kg.

He came very close to improving on that total with narrow misses during attempts of 108 kg in the snatch and 135 kg in the clean & jerk.

This was Latimer's second appearance in the Canadian Junior Weightlifting Championships. He also won bronze in 2017, competing in the 69 kg body weight class.

Latimer's weightlifting Sinclair ranking of 296.9909 currently ranks him 12th on the absolute ranking list for all junior weightlifters in Canada, an improvement of 10 placings over last year's ranking.

The event in Halifax attracted 75 top qualifying male and female junior weightlifters up to 20 years of age from eight provinces.

Latimer trains mostly in his home gym but is also a member of Farm Strong Athletics, an Edmonton weightlifting club. He is coached by his father Bryan Latimer and former weightlifting champion Brett Garrett of Edmonton.
